The decline of the summer job

This summer American teenagers should find it a little easier to get a job--if they want one.
The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 4.3 percent in May, the lowest in 16 years, so teens started looking for summer jobs in the best labor market since the tech boom of the early 2000s. The May unemployment rate for 16- to 19-year-olds was 14.3 percent, but teens usually find it harder to find jobs than their more experienced elders. Back in 2009, the teenage jobless rate hit 27 percent.
A CareerBuilder survey of 2,587 employers released last month found that 41 percent were planning to hire seasonal workers for the summer, up from 29 percent last year.
But the unemployment rate measures joblessness only among people who are actively looking for work. And many American teens aren’t.
For Baby Boomers and Generation X, the summer job was a rite of passage. Today’s teenagers have other priorities. Teens are likeliest to be working in July, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that’s not seasonally adjusted. In July of last year, 43 percent of 16- to 19-year-olds were either working or looking for a job. That’s 10 points lower than in July 2006. In 1988 and 1989, the July labor force participation rate for teenagers nearly hit 70 percent.
Why aren’t teens working? Lots of theories have been offered: They’re being crowded out of the workforce by older Americans, now working past 65 at the highest rates in more than 50 years. Immigrants are competing with teens for jobs; a 2012 study found that less educated immigrants affected employment for U.S. native-born teenagers far more than for native-born adults. Parents are pushing kids to volunteer and sign up for extracurricular activities instead of working, to impress college admission counselors. College-bound teens aren’t looking for work because the money doesn’t go as far as it used to. “Teen earnings are low and pay little toward the costs of college,” the BLS noted this year. The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour. Elite private universities charge tuition of more than $50,000.
Or maybe, as cranky old people have asserted for generations, teenagers are just getting lazy.
A recent BLS analysis offers another theory, backed up by solid data. It appears that millions of teenagers aren’t working because they’re studying instead.
Over the last few decades, education has taken up more and more of teenagers’ time, as school districts lengthen both the school day and the academic year. During the school year, academic loads have gotten heavier. Education is also eating up teenagers’ summers. Teens aren’t going to summer school just because they failed a class and need to catch up. They’re also enrolling in enrichment courses and taking courses for college credit.
In July of last year, more than two in five 16- to 19-year-olds were enrolled in school. That’s four times as many as were enrolled in 1985, BLS data show.
Students have more to learn in their four years of high school. In 1982, fewer than one in 10 high school graduates had completed at least four years of English classes, three years of math, science, and social science, and two years of a foreign language. By 2009, the most recent data in the U.S. Digest of Education Statistics, the share of grads taking those classes was almost 62 percent.
High school students aren’t just taking more classes. They’re taking tougher ones. What’s happened in math reflects trends in other areas. Calculus is up threefold since the early 1980s, while precalculus is up more than fivefold, and statistics and probability courses are up tenfold. Almost a million students graduated in 2009 having taken an advanced placement (AP) class, up 39 percent from four years earlier.
All this studying has obvious benefits, but a single-minded focus on education has disadvantages, too. A summer job can help teenagers grow up as it expands their experience beyond school and home. Working teens learn how to manage money, deal with bosses, and get along with co-workers of all ages.
A summer job can even save lives. In a study released last month by the National Bureau of Economic Research, researchers analyzed the effects of two Chicago programs providing students with part-time jobs along with mentors for the summer. The programs had little apparent effect on the teens’ later employment or education--a big concern in itself--but arrests for violent crime plunged, by 42 percent for one program and 33 percent for the other, an effect felt for at least a year after the programs ended. If teens got nothing else out of the jobs programs, the researchers suggested, they were at least “learning to better avoid or manage conflict.”

Second Year Second Semester
Dati nagpost ako ng evaluation sa bawat subjects ko nung 1st semester ng 2nd year ko. So bali ngayon i-share ko lang kung ano nangyari sa akin at sa professor ko sa subject na ‘yun.
Basic Economics with Taxation and Agrarian Reform: Natuwa ako kasi ang daming kwento ni Ma’am. Puro hugot mga ganun puro pangaral si Ma’am pero okay lang yun. 7:30 - 10:30 ang class namin sa kanya tapos pumapasok siya ng 9:00 ayun wala na puro kwento pa. Kaya tuwing monday nagpapaload ako para matext siya dahil ako ang class president eh kaso hindi talaga ako nagpapaload napipilitan lang ako dahil sa kanya. Kapag tinetxt ko lagi siya laging out of coverage area kaya ang ginagawa ko pinagrereport ko nalang mga classmate ko. Tapos nagagalit siya sa akin kapag pumirma ako sa listahan ng checker ng mga late na prof. Nastress rin ako sa class record na pinagawa niya sa akin, tuwing Monday ang bigat ng bag ko dahil palaging may laman na apat na exercise ng 60 students kasama na mga irregular.
Principle of Programming Language: Ayun si Ma’am siya nalang hindi nageencode ng grade sa lahat ng prof namin. Una nagaalangan akong maging prof siya kasi wala siya lagi. Hindi nakakatuwa yun kasi sayang tuition kapag ganun. Pero in the end na pasabi na lang ako na thank you na dahil siya ang prof namin dahil hindi siya maarte sa mga activities at project. Tapos ang dali niya pakiusapan na sabihin ko lang “Ma’am pwede po makahingi ng break. Fully load po kami sa trabaho ngayong week.” tapos aagree siya . Mabait si Ma’am yun nga lang madalang pumasok.
Statistics and Probability: Kung sino man taga-PUP sa inyo tapos engineering, panigurado kilala niyo yuung prof ko. Si Engr. Edwin O. Berico. Nagisip isip na ako na lumipat ng section sa subject na yun kasi nagpapaulan si sir ng singko pero sabi ko sa sarili ko hindi ako susuko. Kung nagpapau]lan siya ng singko, magpapayong ako para di ako maulanan. Sobrang hirap ng subject niya, I mean ng way ng pagturo niya sa subject niya sa amin kaya sinasabi sa amin ng ibang block na madali lang yun. Isip isp ko na “Uy ikaw kaya magtake ng stats na may Integral Calculus dahil sa mga continuity tapos walang formula para sa corelation at regression.”. Pero advantage naman yun sa amiin yung pressure na kinasanayan namin sa kanya. Thank God dahil di ako naulanan ng singko niya.
Differential Calculus: Dahil natapos na ang Analytic Geometry (ang subject na sinumpa ko), natuwa na ako dahil hindi na siya ang prof ko pero laking gulat ko ng nakita ko yung acocunt ko sa sis sabi ko “Hala taena siya nanaman prof namin!”. Ang hirap niya talaga magturo at magpaquiz. 4 long bond paper tapos 5 items lang na puro graph tapos no choice dapat with solution. Kaya lagi malinis ang papel ko sa quizzes sa Analytic Geometry. Pero iba sa Diff Calc dahil hindi siya ang nagturo kung hindi yung student assistant niya. Ang approachable nun kahit laging on fleek yung kilay niya hahaha. Nadalian ako sa subject na yan kasi puro derive derive lang mga ganun. Tapos isang di ko makakalimutan diya ay yun naiwan ko sabahay yung index card ng block namin. Yung index card na yun magsisilbing plus 10 para sa buong klase eh naalala ko na kasi nung nasa Tayuman na ako wtf. No choice ginawa nung umaga hanggang tanghali dahil dun diu ako nakatulong sa Lexical Analyzer namin. 
Personal and Professional Development: Napakalaking tulong nitong subject na ‘to dahil ang dami kong narealize na kailangang baguhin sa sarili mula sa pag-aayos, posture, grooming atbp. Nastress din ako sa paevent na pinaorganize sa akin. Yung Corporate Presentation Program. Mula letter of reservation, pagpunta sa Divisoria, pagporganize sa mga classmate ko paggawa ng certificate at pag-ayos ng venue. Buti nalang nandyan yung VP, Secretary at Treasurer ko na tumulong sa akin para maging successful ang event. Dahil din sa pagiging late ng prof ko nakapagextend kami ng 1 hour at nagbayad pa kami ng 500 pesos.
Fundamentals and Database Systems: Ayun siya ulit prof ko yung prof ko sa Digital Circuit. Ang daming nagsasabi na lumipat na kami dahil bumubuo siya ng isang buong class sa summer class, oh di ba ang galing. Pero di ako sumuko tianke ko talaga silang challenge. Ayun sabi ko magaling naman pala si Ma’am ang dami namin natutunan sa kanya. ERD, EERD, Normalization, SQL, Projection, Selection atbp. Yung tipong nanormalize  na inonormalize mo pa, eh wala ka na ngang makitang dapat inormalize pero pipiltin niyang meron pa.Tapos nagbigayan ng grade tapos di ko inexpect yung grade ko sa kanya kasi di ko deserve kaya pupunta ako sa school sa thursday ehh.
PE: Angas ng prof namin dito kapag naulan quiz kapag hindi sa field kami. Bilad kami lagi sa arawan dahil 2:00 PM ang PE namin dapat magrash guard kami kaso hindi kami swimming at baka mapagalitan kami. Ito pa, nageencode ako nun ng grade sa defense sa isang subject tapos lumapit sa akin yung isa kong classmate na INC daw kami lahat kasi umabsent daw kami eh last day na tas binawi niya edi ako si punta dun sa gym para kausapin niya. Ayun pakipot lang pala siya pasikat sa isang section.
Automata and Language Theory: Unang beses ko nameet yung prof dito tapos sabi baka masingko kasi 99 na estudyante ang binabagsak ni Ma’am. Kinabahan ako nung sinabi niya sa klase namin nung nagpaxerox ako ng module namin. Sabi niya “Walang kwenta yung president niyo”. Naging motivation sa akin yun na ipakita kay Ma’am na mali yung impression niya sa akin. Hanggang sa naging close kami kay Ma’am at tinanong niya ako kung running ba ako ng honors para mataas niya yung grade ko pero sabi ko hindi na ako running dahil sa Analytic Geometry last semester. Nagpost siya naggrade tapos natutuwa ako sa kanya dahil pinatunayan niya na lahat ng efforts ay natutumbasan. Sana siya prof ko sa Artificial Intelligence at Compiler Design nect semester.
Technical Documentation and Presentation Skills of System: Tuwang tuwa ako kay Ma’am dahil sabi niya isa daw ako sa matataas sa klase dahil best presentor daw ako ng system. Pero wala ang laki ng hinatak ng grade ko dahil sa hindi niya ako pinagbigyan sa nagiisa niyang quiz sabi niya kasi choice ko daw yun eh nagbigay naman ako ng excuse letter sa kanya tapos ganun siya nakaklungkot lang.
Ayun buti tapos na ang 2nd year at 3rd year na ako na sana tuloy tuloy walang malaglag dahil kapag may nalaglag na isang subject patay ka Chris! Hello 5th year ka!

What have you liked and disliked the most about your current program/degree?
Hmmmm
That's a tough one. I definitely have some likes and dislikes so far, but then again, my experiences have also been heavily shaped by the pandemic and starting my program in the middle of it. I've literally never been to campus or met my advisor outside of a video call. Hell, the last time I was in Maryland was probably when I was like 12. So it's been a minute.
Some likes:
The interdisciplinarity: they really push this idea of working across disciplines and areas of specialization, which I appreciate. My background is very much not in research. I have a BA in literature and a MS in library and info science. And now I'm a social sciences researcher in a STEM degree. But I'm able to pull in theory from other disciplines (like media studies or gender studies) and kind of do my own thing
My advisor: she's really awesome and has been a great guide this year, though I have learned that I need to have more contact with her to really feel comfortable and to succeed. She's a fairly hands-off kind of advisor by default, but I'm working to figure out what style works best for me (which seems to be having somewhat regular one-on-one meetings to discuss progress and keep me on track). Everyone says you need to prioritize advisor choice pretty highly (or even make it your top priority) when picking a PhD program, and honestly? They're right. My advisor is awesome and genuinely cares about her students, which is more than I can say for some of the people I've known in PhD programs.
My cohort: am I best buddies with everyone? No, of course not. There's 20 of us. A good portion of them are 10+ years older than me, so that left me feeling super out of place and impostor-y especially near the beginning of the program. But I've found my niche. There are seven or eight of them that I tend to talk to quite a bit and a few more I'm friendly with and some that I don't really talk to outside of class. But we've got a Discord server, and I've somehow like become one of the nodes of the group?? Like I am not at all an extrovert and will gladly not interact with any humans at all for sometimes days at a time. But I feel like a lot of people reach out to me and a few of them have made comments to me about being excited about me moving to Maryland soon and y'all, I'm really glad I have these people 💜
Some dislikes:
Online classes: okay, so not really the university's fault, BUT some of them are asynchronous on top of being online?? (Meaning that all the lectures are recorded and you do it all on your own) So I feel like it's not really that different from teaching myself using YouTube. And lbr, I definitely used YouTube as a major resource in my asynchronous online statistics course. If I was paying tuition, I'd probably be pretty angry about it because it just feels like a lower quality of learning honestly. Also, I have ADHD, so even when I'm in a synchronous online class, my brain (and mouse) will wander after a point.
Their whole online system honestly: I did not know how spoiled I was by my two previous universities until I started at Maryland and found out that I can't access my own class schedule online except during specific hours??? Like what?? Also, for their course catalog where the schedule of classes is, if a class is online, it doesn't list a date or time for that class. An in-person class says "Monday 2-3:45" or whatever, but online classes just say that times and dates are on the elearning platform. But you can't see the time and date of a class unless you're registered for that class, added to the class on the elearning platform, and the instructor has posted that information there. Like I did not know that my summer class was entirely asynchronous until literally the day the semester started. It's madness
Honestly not knowing what my field is: there's a blessing and a curse to being in information science/studies. On the one hand, you can make the argument that basically anything counts as info sci/studies. On the other hand, you can make the argument that basically anything counts as info sci/studies. So no one can actually really define what it is we do, and no one knows where the boundaries are--just that they probably exist somewhere. Like, I study fanfiction, right? Fans and information behavior and all kinds of nerdy fandom goodness. And then one of my classmates works in AI ethics. Someone else is doing something with Wikipedia, citizen science, and lakes (which is honestly fascinating). Another does something to do with content moderation and social media videos and misinformation? Honestly, I know it's a thing, but I don't understand a lot of it. But we're all doing wildly different things and somehow getting the same degree. So they lump us all together under one degree that no one really understands, and we're all just like "oh that sounds cool. I have no idea what it means." every time someone talks about their project.

In advance of this year’s New York Democratic primaries, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez had already generated a lot of attention, thanks in large part to a viral campaign advertisement called “The Courage to Change.” The spot highlights how Ocasio-Cortez is, to put it simply, not your average congressional candidate. As the 2016 Bernie Sanders campaigner says in a voiceover for the two-minute ad:
Women like me aren’t supposed to run for office. I wasn’t born to a wealthy or powerful family. Mother from Puerto Rico, dad from the South Bronx. I was born in a place where your zip code determines your destiny. My name is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. I’m an educator, an organizer, a working-class New Yorker. I’ve worked with expectant mothers, I’ve waited tables, and led classrooms, and going into politics wasn’t in the plan.
So, what compelled the 28-year-old Ocasio-Cortez to run? Not to suggest her campaign is a derivative one, but her platform sounds a lot like one belonging to a certain Vermont senator who ran for president:
After 20 years of the same representation, we have to ask: who has New York been changing for? Every day gets harder for working families like mine to get by. The rent gets higher, health care covers less, and our income stays the same. It’s clear that these changes haven’t been for us, and we deserve a champion. It’s time to fight for a New York that working families can afford.
That’s why I’m running for Congress. This race is about people vs. money. We’ve got people, they’ve got money. It’s time we acknowledge that not all Democrats are the same. That a Democrat who takes corporate money, profits off foreclosure, doesn’t live here, doesn’t send his kids to our schools, doesn’t drink our water or breathe our air cannot possibly represent us. What the Bronx and Queens need is Medicare-for-all, tuition-free public college, a federal jobs guarantee, and criminal justice reform.
We can do it now. It doesn’t take a hundred years to do this. It takes political courage. A New York for the many is possible. It’s time for one of us.
Ocasio-Cortez has stated her campaign is not about progressives vs. establishment Democrats, and rather, that it’s about people over politics and money, but it’s clear from her mission statement that she’s there in opposition to politics as usual, and if that means going through long-tenured party members to do it, so be it.
In particular, her campaign spot name-checks Joe Crowley, the Democratic representative from her district and member of the House since 1999 (hence, the “20 years” reference). Crowley, for what it’s worth, doesn’t seem like a bad guy per se, but he also represents the centrist, “old white guy” political mold that voters increasingly are eschewing in their embrace of substantive policy ideas (and it probably doesn’t help he’s been chummy with lobbyists and pro-business types). Sure, he’s moved farther left than when he started in Congress, but going against someone who looks and sounds like a real-deal progressive, he and others like him are suddenly more vulnerable.
As the title of this post would indicate, they may be very vulnerable, indeed. In a fairly surprising result, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez took down the 10-term incumbent Crowley in last week’s primary, capturing 57% of the vote. Ocasio-Cortez’s “upset” win is surprising for any number of reasons, not the least of which is her status as a relative unknown and political neophyte, Crowley’s entrenchment in Washington, and her being outdone roughly 10-to-one in campaign spending. Ocasio-Cortez’s political bid began seemingly as a feel-good story, and progressives likely would have been happy with her showing regardless of the outcome. Now, however, she appears poised to be a force to be reckoned with.
In the immediate aftermath of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s upending of Joe Crowley’s re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-re-election bid, it would seem few are really well equipped to reckon with her success. Certainly, that we are even treating her victory as a surprise is owed somewhat to the media’s previous lack of focus on her, a trend that others outside the establishment vanguard have encountered (see also Cynthia Nixon, of whom we would stand to know little if we weren’t already familiar with her acting).
Journalist Glenn Greenwald, who has been consistently critical of the blind eye turned toward progressives in everyday political discourse, in particular, chastised Joy-Ann Reid and MSNBC in a couple of tweets the day after Ocasio-Cortez’s upset win:
Compare @JoyAnnReid’s revealingly insular and self-justifying tweet above about how “political journalism” (i.e. MSNBC) ignored the @Ocasio2018 race to @brianstelter’s honest and accurate @CNN story on how several media outlets actually covered the race.
A cable network that is monomaniacally devoted to faithfully serving the agenda of Party leaders and uncritically disseminating their talking points is obviously going to miss – or deliberately suppress – any challenges to those Party dictates. That’s what happened there.
While MSNBC talking heads are overlooking progressive candidates for public office and even the sources that more closely follow them, moderate Democrats are painting Ocasio-Cortez’s victory as an anomaly or one-off rather than a sign of the times during this post-mortem period. Nancy Pelosi, notably, dismissed these returns from NY-14 as being indicative of a movement or anything “larger” than one district. It’s perplexing considering the energy and press following Ocasio-Cortez seem like things Democrats of all make and model should be embracing. Then again, this is Nancy Pelosi we’re talking about here, a woman that Republicans seeking office are only too happy to have around because she evidently possesses a Hillary Clinton-like ability to make public declarations GOP political advertisers can use to their strategic advantage to make her and the Dems seem out of touch.
Speaking of Republicans, they’ve got their own reasons to be scared of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Jay Willis, writing for GQ Magazine, explains that they’re “terrified” of the 28-year-old political hopeful, precisely because they can’t beat her on a policy debate. Instead, conservatives like John Cardillo have resorted to questioning her credentials right down to her upbringing, suggesting, among other things, that she grew up in a more wealthy household/neighborhood than she is otherwise letting on. This, to me, is akin to the types of conspiracy theories that would have you believe survivors of mass shootings and children separated from their families at the Mexican border are paid actors. It’s as reprehensible as it is dishonest.
In short, centrist Democrats, conservative Republicans, and corporatist media outlets all see Ocasio-Cortez as somewhat of a threat, and this seems to be as much about her identity as her policy goals. In talking about her “identity,” I’m referring not to Ocasio-Cortez’s Bronx upbringing or Puerto Rican heritage, but her self-identification as a “democratic socialist.”
Much in the way Bernie Sanders was assailed on all sides from people who failed to draw distinctions between “democratic socialism” and “socialism” and ostensibly socialist regimes which belie a dictatorial bent—or intentionally confused them—Ocasio-Cortez’s win is forcing to those on the left and right alike to come to grips with the dreaded S-word. Within the press community, numerous outlets have taken to publishing articles trying to explain for the uninitiated what the heck, exactly, democratic socialism is. Nancy Pelosi, while diminishing Ocasio-Cortez’s surprise victory, also has publicly rejected the notion that socialism is “ascendant” within Democratic ranks.
On the right, meanwhile, SOCIALISM! SOCIALISM! BURN THE WITCH! This salvo from Cheryl Chumley for The Washington Times entitled “Ocasio-Cortez, New York’s socialist congressional contender, an enemy of America,” I share because I find it especially repugnant. It characterizes her primary win as a “face slap to America,” and an “affront to all the Founding Fathers forged.” Chumley is the same woman who recently authored an essay on how “Democrats hate America,” apparently with the numbers to prove this assertion. For the record, her “numbers” are one statistic from a Gallup poll that shows Democrats are less likely to be “extremely proud” to be an American than their Republican counterparts — which surely doesn’t have anything to do with the Trump White House, a GOP-led Congress, and a conservative-majority Supreme Court, right? — and vague sentiments that reference Antifa, democratic socialists, and Obama apologists into one nebulous mix to be feared and loathed. Sorry, Ocasio-Cortez doesn’t look and sound and think like you, Ms. Chumley. I forgot that makes her automatically less American or patriotic.
But about those policy goals. In the vein of a Bernie Sanders, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez supports progressive ideals such as Medicare-for-all, a $15 minimum wage, free tuition for public colleges, campaign finance reform and housing as a human right. These are not new and are not controversial to the extent that fellow Democrats may not explicitly argue against them, though they may be reluctant to embrace them in favor of more centrist policies.
Other views, meanwhile, are outside the mainstream, either by virtue of their direct opposition to commonly-held stances within the party or their relative novelty among leadership. For one, Ocasio-Cortez has been a vocal critic of Israel and joins an evidently growing number of people on an international stage who question the free pass Netanyahu’s government receives for its actions related to Israeli settlements and its handling of Palestinian resistance to the latter group’s apparent subjugation.
While she hasn’t yet clarified her position on the BDS movement, that the Democratic Socialists of America are pro-boycott worries the Democratic elites who have come to count on wealthy Jewish patrons and staunchly pro-Israel groups among their lists of donors. It’s another point of potential division between factions within the Democratic Party, which tend to get played up for effect in the media anyway, but nonetheless may be indicative of a fracture between the old guard and the new vying to push the party in a certain diplomatic direction.
The other major policy quirk which has drawn additional attention to Ocasio-Cortez’s platform is her embrace of an “abolish ICE” mantra. On this note, her views seem to lack nuance, although it would likely be difficult to rally behind a cause with a more cumbersome message. As it would seem, Ocasio-Cortez only wants to “abolish” Immigration and Customs Enforcement to the extent that it would be replaced with a more accountable agency or otherwise reformed.
Of course, Republicans have sought to weaponize this stated goal by insinuating that Democrats who want to abolish ICE are asking for no border control at all. Hence, other Dems have been reluctant to embrace the slogan. Then again, in light of the ongoing crisis facing the detention and separation of immigrant families, as well as numerous alleged abuses by ICE and U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents, the discussion over what is permitted in the name of “border security” is a worthy one.
All this has made for a rather confusing dissection of a race that few outside of progressive circles and Ocasio-Cortez’s own support system were wont to predict in her favor, a dissection that tests us as consumers of the news to view our sources critically. After all, what these outlets say about the congressional hopeful may say as much about them as it does her. In the case of Cheryl Chumley, it reveals ugly attitudes predicated on jingoistic paranoia. As such, while the November election in New York’s 14th congressional district will now undoubtedly receive much more widespread attention, how much of it is good or fair remains to be seen.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has only just won the Democratic primary for her district, but given the heavy blue leanings of NY-14, she’s looking like a pretty sure bet to make it to Congress. Either way, there is real energy behind her and her campaign, and not just from New Yorkers.
In Ocasio-Cortez, many pundits see the future of the Democratic Party, one of female leadership and better representation for people of color and other minority groups. They also see, in progressives like Ocasio-Cortez daring to go “further left,” Democrats more authentically embracing the values that the party’s detractors would say mainline Dems have all but abandoned over the years, particularly in defending the working class and organized labor from attempts by the GOP to erode their influence.
By proxy, search for “Nancy Pelosi” and you’ll see umpteen calls for her to step aside or hand the baton over. Her defenders, meanwhile, see her as a great leader, prodigious fundraiser, and tireless worker, so it may just as well be that Pelosi isn’t going anywhere.
While comments to downplay Ocasio-Cortez’s and other progressives’ influence reflect poorly on Pelosi, it also is worth mentioning that one upset victory does not a party takeover make. This is not meant to throw water on the fire of young candidates on the rise, but rather to underscore the magnitude of the opposition others like Ocasio-Cortez will face from Democrats (esp. firmly-entrenched incumbents) and Republicans (esp. in red-leaning areas) alike.
Following Ocasio-Cortez’s win, candidates like Ayanna Presley in Massachusetts and Kerri Harris of Delaware have seen an uptick in their donations. Primary results still matter, though, and much work has to be done by their campaigns to build on their compatriot from New York’s success. In short, while there is momentum building, this is not to say that democratic socialism in the United States has truly arrived.
Still, that we’re even having this discussion about Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the future of the Democratic Party means that we can’t rule out Presley’s or Harris’s chances, and that the discussion about whether platforms like theirs can be adapted to succeed in jurisdictions like the Midwest where the GOP possesses an advantage is a meritorious one. Seeing various reactions to Ocasio-Cortez’s win characterized by sheer bafflement, this only reinforces the idea few were ready for the eventuality of a liberal progressive gaining traction. Thus, while it’s too early to say what exactly this upset means, it’s highly intriguing to see people so “shook” over it.
Here’s hoping for a little more shaking-up before the 2018 election season is done.
